Very low supply from one (.) only

Hi all,

Can anyone help me? I'm EPing for my 5 week old DS, and keeping up with his daily feeds comfortably with no need to supplement. However I have no excess milk for freezing, and really want to try to get a freezer stash going! I'm expressing every 2 hours in the day, and at 11pm, 2am and 6am during the night.

Like I say, I have a decent-ish supply, but from my left breast I can only get 1oz, maybe 2 if it's been 3+ hours between pumps, which is roughly 1/3- 1/2 of the total amount from the other. I think if I could boost the supply from thi breast then I can start to get my freezer stash going!

Any tips on how to do this? I'm using an Ameda Elite pump, which is a hosptial-grade double electric so there are no issues surrounding my quality of pump lol. I always pump for longer than the milk flows too to encourage supply, and it works ou that the left breast gets loads of extra stimulation anyway as the right drains for a lot longer than the left! There is no milk in my left if I try to hand express either, and the breast always feels very soft after pumping so I know it's emptying.

Thanks for all replies!

Perfectly normal. I was worried about this at first too but found out that unequal production between the (.) is normal. My left produces 1/2 to 1/3 of my right and always has, I'm 4 months EPing now. Like you, I've never had a problem keeping up with my LO so far even with the difference.

Thanks for the reply. So there is nothing I can do to boot it then? That's a shame!

It increases with time but only as your total supply increases. See the replies in the post I made a few months back.

I had a VERY low supply from the beginning as well. I really struggled my first 8 weeks, but it seems to be getting better.

Have you tried taking herbal galactagogues like fenugreek, blessed thistle and spirulina? I've found that taking these has helped increase my supply along with cluster pumping and pumping 8-10X a day.

Also, you might consider taking a pharmacological galactagogue like domperidone. you can read about them here: http://lowmilksupply.org/increasingmilk.shtml That's been really helpful to me. The only thing is that you seem to not be able to drop baby weight as fast, but I'd rather feed my baby than fit into my size 4-6s right away. I don't think I'll ever have a gigantic supply, but over the day, I can now get 25-28 oz. out after 8X pumping. It feeds my 10 week old baby, so that's all that matters to me.

I also bought the book "Making More milk" which helped me understand why I might have a low supply.

Be strong and give yourself big props-you are doing an amazing thing by EPing. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply. Have taken fenugreek but didn't find it made much difference. It really helped when I got my hosptial grade pump and I'm pumping around 2-4oz a session over the course of 10 daily sessions. I'm getting around 30oz a day and my DS is drinkign anything from 20-26oz a day so I'm managing to get a freezer stash going now, have about 35oz in there now yay!

Thanks for posting this, I am having the same issue with my right breast yielding about half the volume of my left.

An update...

I think I have (or did have) a plugged duct on my right side.
