Drop in Supply at 7 months

I have been eping since my daughter was born and things have been going really well. I would consider myself an avp with a decent amount in the freezer. School started about 2 months ago and I went down to 4 pumps a day a little before that and about a month a ago went down to 3 pumps. It has been working fine, I'm not about to get enough to freeze, but am getting enough for her to eat. Until 2 weeks ago! I started drinking more water the past couple days, I probably wasn't getting enough, and I've seen a little bounce back in supply (like an ounce or 2). But does any one have any suggestions? I called the lactation consultant and she told me I should be pumping 8x a day - yeah right! Been there, done that, not going back! I have some fenugreek at home, but haven't started taking it, would that work this late in the game? Any suggestions (other then 8 pumps a day) would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like there have been a few changes for you recently which has caused a decrease in supply - not only the drop in sessions, but school too.

Many times women can only go as low as 4-5x's a day before they start to notice a decrease in supply.  Have you gotten AF back?  Have you started BC of any kind?  Been under more stress lately?  I would suggest trying to add in maybe one more session in the evening if you can and ensure you are completely empty at each session - breast compressions etc. to ensure most of the milk is out.

Definately up your water intake, as you have, and make sure your diet is as balanced as possible.  Taking a herbal supplement now won't hurt either, so if you want to, try it!

Thanks for writing. I am feeling ilke I have more crazy hormones now then I ever did when I was pregnant, and AF showed up today! I'm feeling amazed that I made it this long. I look back at the 0-3 month posts and remember thinking I would never make it to the 6-12 months! Here I am, I've made it longer then I thought I would, my daughter has been healthy and happy, and I think I feel selfish because I don't want to give up my lunch to add back in a pump. So, I guess I either be okay with supplimenting a bottle or two a day or I get back down to business and starting pumping!

Once AF returns, I've read that my production will be down, but then go back up a little when it's done? Or is my body just saying it's done?

Yes, AF will definately decrease your supply.  I also got mine back while EP'ing, some mama's dont, and I noticed a hit to supply leading up to AF, during AF and then a day or so after.  I never did seem to regain all the supply I had after my first visit from AF, but I didn't loose alot, it was around an oz or so - then a bit more once AF was coming and during etc. and then it would come up again a bit once it was done.

Your body isn't saying quit...but are you? Wink  There is nothing wrong with wanting to spend your lunch hour without the pump, you just need to decide if you're good supplementing or not?  At first I didn't think I was, then over time I felt more comfortable and it did give me some breathing room...that I needed!

Maybe wait it out and see how your supply recovers, then decide.  Maybe you could get by only having to supplement while your AF is around...so that wouldn't be too bad at all!

Im having the same issue 8 months of ep, and not my supply dropped drasticly. I used to pump 55oz-60oz a day, Now i can barely cover a days work. I have about 2300oz in my deep freezer... but still. I did get me AF back this week as well, so i'm hoping thats all it is
