How much expressed milk to give to 7.5 month old?

Hi there,

I was wondering how much ebm you give your 7.5 month olds that are on 2+ solid feedings a day? He weighs about 18 pounds, probably more now. I have had to exclusively pump because my baby has rejected the breast suddenly. Any guidelines on where to start would be helpful and appreciated.

Thank you

I would give baby 2-3 ounces from the slowest flow nipple you have, every 2-3 hours.  Keep the schedule as close to nursing as you can if you plan to try and get baby back to the breast.

My DS went on a fairly estensive nursing strike aroun 8 months old because of what turned out to be a lot of teething.  He stayed off the breast for about 5-6 weeks, got 4 teeth in during that time, and magically decided to go back to nursing after that.

Good luck to you!!

Thank you so much for your response!! Yes, my baby has 6 teeth at the moment, and the 4 on the top are about halfway down. Those seem to be the ones that are bothering him. He bites down SO HARD on bottles, spoons, anything. He was biting me the whole day leading up to the strike.

I am currently feeding him a total of 17oz a day of expressed milk from a preemie nipple. We have kept the same exact schedule as we did with nursing.

It is so nice to read that there is hope that he will go back to the breast, even if it takes a while. Exclusively pumping, bottle feeding, and feeding solids takes up my entire day. I feel like I don't have any time to play with him.

How did you get your baby back to the breast? One day he just decided he wanted to nurse? Or did you constantly offer? My baby arches his back, screams bloody murder whenever I put him near the breast. It is breaking my heart.

Sorry, I didn't check this board to see that you posted yesterday.  DS is now 26...amost 27 months old....so I don't pump anymore and I only check this board sporadically.

He mostly got himself back to the breast.  I did everything that is generally advised: feed on demand, skin to skin, lots of positive playful interactions.  But really, he decided to nurse one day and I just sat and cried, I was so happy about it.  I had made up my mind to EP until he turned one, but was thankful that I didn't have to since it is such increadibly hard work.  I don't remember any particular trick, but it was the comfort nursing that came first followed by the for real meals after.  There are great resources online at kellymom, if you haven't seen them.

For a while, we went through a period where I could get him to nurse at night, basically while sleeping, but not awake.  It still took a bit to transition him back to a regular nursing schedule and me off the pump (other than when I was at work).

For what it is worth though, we got through the big bad nursing strike and he kept on nursing until he was about 22 months old.  At that point he was nursing so little (about 1-2 minutes a few times a couple of times a week) that I just decided it was time to be done.  So you can absolutely make it through this strech and go on to nurse for a long time.

Hope that helps!!  Feel free to ask more questions or come find me over on the working and pumping board too!!  I will try to remember to check back here for you to see how things are going.
