question about going to 3 pumps

So my baby will be 7 months old in a few days, my goal is to give him breast milk till he is 12 months old or until he can drink regular milk. My sister gave both of her boys whole milk at 10 months and they did fine. I currently pump 4 times a day and make 38-44 ounces. My baby usually drinks 30 oz at most a day, but with introducing foods many times it is less. I have a decent freezer stash and have been rotating it using a bag of frozen at least every other day so it doesn't go to waste.

Anyway my question is do you think it is safe for me to drop to 3 pumps a day? How much do you think I might lose and do you think I will still make it to 12 months? I prefer to not use any formula and am willing to stay at 4 pumps a day I am just wondering how long I should stay at 4 pumps since I am pumping more then my baby is eating. I have already drop the motn pump. I usually pump right before I go to bed and then don't pump again till I get up in the morning, which is usually anywhere from 8 to 10 hours.

Just looking for some advice, I really want to drop to add a little more freedom in my day without having to carry my pump everywhere with me. And for those of you who dropped to 3 how did you do it? Because of my work schedule my pumping times during the day is never the same, because at work my lunch break is rarely at the same time.

Thanks for any input!

I'm sort of in the same boat as you - pumping at 4x per day, and wanting to make sure LO has BM through her first birthday. I have also dropped my MOTN pump, except for days like today when LO decides to get up for the day at 5 am. I would really like to provide fresh BM for LO through cold and flu season (I am thinking April).

It sounds like most people lose a few ounces going from 4 to 3, and from 3 to 2, and I suspect the amount varies a lot from woman to woman. I've been lucky so far not to have my supply seriously impacted by anything, so I haven't been in the position of having to add back in pumps to try to get supply back. It seems like most ladies do have success getting their supply back up by adding pumps back in or adding back the MOTN pump. I make almost double what my LO drinks in a day, but now I have started donating, and want to be able to keep doing that for another few months. I really don't want to lose any of my supply, so I am not going to drop to 3 pumps until November or December. I will probably start working on dropping to 2 in January or February. But if you want to try to drop now, and lose more ounces than you want, you can add back in that 4th pump.

From what I've read, when dropping pumps, some people gradually reduce the # of minutes on the pump you want to drop until you're at 0, and others try to merge two pumps into one by timing them a little closer together each day. I'm sure someone who has gone through this process can explain it better.

Good luck with your decision!

thanks, I haven't had a problem dropping pumps so far so I guess if I do notice a larger hit I will just have to add the 4th pump back in. I have started going longer hours between pumps during the day so far so good. I just want to be able to go out for a day with out the pump.
