weaning update

So weaning has not been going too well. A month or so ago I decided to drop from 4x to 3x a day to start the weaning process. I ended up with engorgement, clogs, and the beginnings of mastitis! I had some red streaks on my stud around the nipple. I didn't have a fever, but I didn't feel that great. This is my third case of mastitis! I thought I could get rid of it on my own. The second time I had it I was able to get rid of it by pumping a lot so that I didn't have to go on antibiotics. The first time I had a fever and went on antibiotics.

For me I think stress is a factor in getting mastitis. I've been pretty busy lately. I wasn't able to get rid of it; it returned and now I am on antibiotics. Since I'm allergic to all of the -cillins I am on an alternate heavy duty prescription. I HATE antibiotics and it makes me so mad that I have to take them.

The good news is that I started taking lecithin to deal with the clogs and it is working great! I'm also taking Evening Primrose Oil in hopes of getting my fertility back. Plus, I take a prenatal vitamin. I also take some probiotic powder when I remember and I bought something called "Yeast Cleanse" that I plan to start taking soon because I am worried about yeast problems resulting from the antibiotic use. I am seriously turning into my mother, who takes a ton of supplements!

One of the problems I ran into lately is that my pump wasn't working too well. I began to suspect this because I was getting a lot more at school (different pump) than at home. I had my LC check it out with a pressure gauge and I was right. I changed out a bunch of the parts and it is working better.

Now I am freaked out about abscesses because it is about the only problem that I haven't experienced yet. I keep checking out the BBs for signs. The problem is that they always feel lumpy to me.

After I get this mastitis under control I am going to start the weaning process again. My LC recommends dropping minutes from each pump instead of dropping pumps. Any thoughts on this? Right now I am pumping 5x a day. My LC recommended 6x with a night pump, but I just can't do it. I produce 35 oz a day (it increased as a result of increasing pumps). My daughter isn't eating much, my freezer is nearly full, and I want to stop! I might start taking the sage tea. I'm not sure that I'm ready for it, but I really want to drop to 1-2x a day and I'm really nervous after my last experience trying to drop pumps.

Thanks for reading! My pumping journey continues... Oh, Merry Christmas!

Ugh--Sorry to hear about the weaning issues! I am dropping from 4 to 3 tomorrow. I hope I don't have issues. I considered staying at 4 and just dropping time from each pump. I wonder which way is best. I am glad the lecithin is working for you--it has worked great for me also--even if I do get a mini clog--it usually comes out very easily. Best of luck when you restart!

LOL about turning into your mom! It's crazy that you are trying to make less, and your body makes more? I am jealous ;) I absolutely hate antibiotics, too, but you do what you have to do, I guess. I hope weaning goes a little easier for you. My LC said when you get mastitis it''s usually because you are doing too much, maybe it's true in your case?

For people who are prone to clogs and mastitis, it isn't recommended to just drop a pump "cold turkey". You have to wean down - I always recommend dropping time or amount...

So, let's say if you currently pump 5x a day for 20 minutes and get 7 oz each time, you pick ONE pump session to start on....and only pump either for 15 minutes at that one, or to 6 oz. Pump as normal at your other pumps - to empty. Continue to drop time or amount every 2-3 days as long as things are going well (i.e. no mastitis or clogs). Once you get to the point where at that time you are going to stop completely, make sure to wait 2-3 days after you stop before picking the next pump and starting your slow but steady wean.

I know this is a slow way to do it, but it DOES work and is much more like what happens when women who are BF wean - baby slowly takes in less and starts skipping a session, etc.

The other way to do it is to pick TWO pumps...let's say you pump at 6 am, 10 am, 2 pm, 5 pm, 8 pm and 10 pm and you want to wean. So, pick two to "merge" into one pump...continue to pump at the other times to empty as normal. So, let's say you start with the 8 pm and 10 pm pumps....well, for 2-3 days you pump at 8:15 and 9:45. IF ok, then for 2-3 days you pump at 8:30 and 9:30....continue to pump closer and closer until you "merge" the pump. You may have to pump "longer" to empty but that is ok. Then, pick the next two to merge. Once you have done this and are down to one pump, then you slowly cut out either one oz or 5-10 minutes off the pump every 2-5 days until you can comfortably stop. Be aware that most moms have to do an every other day thing for about a week once they finally "drop the last one" expressing only to comfort before they can really stop for good.

The other things you can try are using crushed cabbage leaves- I have heard this has a rather dramatic impact and dries things up really fast. The other thing is sudafed...

Good luck!
