sleeping less with solids

Hi

I'm new to posting, but am wondering if someone else has been through this before. My youngest daughter is 4 months old and we've just started her on solids. I know a lot of people wait til later, but she's a pig and drinking a ton of formula and the ped said it was okay to start. I also started at 3.5 mo w/ my other daughter (now almost 3) and it went well.

Previously my 4 monther was sleeping about 5 hours, eat, and sleep 3 more. Since solids she has been waking up every 2.5-3 hours overnight and seems cranky. I thought maybe constipation with rice cereal so tried steamed and mashed pears last night, but got the same result. I didn't necessarily expect her to sleep more with solids, but sure wasn't expecting less.

She enjoys eating the solids too and does well while feeding, it's just a few hours later after putting her down there's issues.

Maybe it's just a phase, but the missed hours of sleep before was bad enough for my husband and I and this is just ridiculous. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Isn't it funny how each child is so different? I have 3 boys and not a single one of them has done things the same as the others!

I'm guessing that the growth spurt really had something to do with her sleep disturbance. Hopefully that has passed for now (or is starting to!) and you'll all be getting better sleep soon. Keep us posted on how things are going!

I considered it maybe was the food, but since it took a few hours to kick in I don't think that's it. I decided to try feeding her just a little earlier and not so close to bedtime and that seemed to help. At least she went back to her old schedule of 4.5-5 hrs before waking. She still isn't a big fan of napping, but as long as it's not as bad at night I'll take it.

My mother and I were also looking at her and both think she's gotten bigger, so maybe it was a growth spurt. My other girl always slept more when she was growing so I was expecting that. Turns out my 2 girls can't be more different from each other!

Thanks for your reply.

Hello and welcome to the board!

I'm sorry that you have been dealing with less sleep- that is no fun for anyone! It is really interesting that she is sleeping less on solids. It often seems that the opposite happens. Do you think that the new foods could be upsetting her belly? Does she act like she has a tummy ache when she wakes?

If that doesn't seem to be the problem, do you think that your daughter may be teething or going through a growth spurt? I always noticed my kiddos would stop sleeping well when either was happening (particularly with the teeth!).
