My daughter is about to start on baby food, and I'm totally lost when it comes to the selections available at the grocery store.

Why not save yourself the grocery store woes and just feed her what you are eating? You can cook it soft and feed her directly or mash with a little water/milk/formula to spoon feed. My DS wouldn't take baby food from the jars/tubes. He was good with our food but wouldn't have anything to do with the jars.....He is almost 17 months old now and I still have 2 containers of stage 1 food in my kitchen cupboard because he totally rejected them. Just my opinion though. No reason that you have to start with liquids or purees and it saves time/effort/money.

I agree with PP. Make your own. Start with squash. It's super easy to make. After trying a couple different types of foods, start mashing up what you're eating. Actually, I should ask first, how old is she? If she's 6 months, then almost anything goes, just make sure it's mushy and small enough that she won't choke on it.
