mine are three years (3 years, 3 months, 4 days ;)). I think there are pros and cons to any age difference. The pros to 3 years is the 3 yo was able to help somewhat with the baby (run and grab a burp cloth or diaper) but it also meant she had to wait until he was over 2 to really be able to play with him. Otherwise he was just into grabbing toys from her.
When they're closer in the pros are the kids will be closer emotionally and hopefully get along better. But then you have two babies and that can be hard.
Also think about your pregnancy and that last month where you don't want to even lift a finger. Your 1 yo will be wanting to run and play and have uppies all day long. :)
Bryan is 12 years old and Wyatt is 10 months old. That was not on purpose though. I was 18 when I had Bryan and a single mom for a few years before I started dating my now husband. We started TTC our first child together as soon as we were married. Buuuuuuut I had some secondary infertility issues and it took us a while to figure out what was wrong and fix it. Then BAM I got pregnant with Wyatt no problem. We will start TTC #3 this summer after Wyatt's first birthday. (If I can hold out that long.) It took us so long to have Wyatt that we don't really want to waste any time with the next one. Just in case it takes us another 4 years to have baby number three.
18 months would be a little too close for me. It takes at least 9-12 months to recover from pregnancy, and that's only if you've really been taking care of yourself. I know way too many moms who had their kids 1-2 years apart and ended up with adrenal fatigue or other health issues. Natural spacing is about 2.5 years and would probably be as close as I would go. I'm nursing so that's also a reason I'd want more time.
I thought I might want to have our next baby asap but now that I've had some time to experience the 3 year gap, I think I'd like to have a larger gap again. My other two are 5 years apart and that's really nice.
