How did you ask...

Hello!  I'm due in December and I'm planning on pumping at work once I've returned.  I'm a bit of a planner so I'm thinking ahead here... how did you ask for a place to pump?  I work in a male dominated environment and there is currently no room set aside for pumping.  How would you approach your supervisors when asking for a place to pump?  Thanks for your help- I'm a bit nervous about asking!

I guess I'm lucky in the fact that there was already space for me at my office so I never had to request a room, but I did have to talk to my supervisor about the need for time to pump.  I simply took the opportunity to discuss it with him while we were discussing my plans for maternity leave.  Once we got through discussing how much time I planned to take I mentioned that once I returned I would be needing time to pump (I explained that I was breastfeeding).....my boss didn't miss a beat and simply told me to do what was necessary and simply block the time on my calendar so people didn't bombard me with meetings during that time.

Does your boss have children?  This may make it easier for him to understand (even if his wife didn't breastfeed).  Is there a female HR person you are comfortable with.....because this might ultimately be an HR decision since I'm assuming whatever they set up could/would be used by future pumping moms?  Do you think your boss will have an issue with you pumping at work or are you just nervous about having the conversation in general?

Good luck!
