Entering uncharted territory...

Hi, all. My little Alex is turning 11 months today. (YAY!) This is the first time I've made it anywhere near this far with breastfeeding or pumping, so I'm unsure if what is going on is a phase, a bad habit, or what. Alex has been cutting down the amount she takes during the day, whether I'm at work or not. This is totally fine with me, I could definitely stand to pump less nowadays. She is taking more solids, and totally distractable during the day so she doesn't really want to stop and nurse or drink from a bottle when there is stuff going on around her. When I am home, typically she nurses during the day only when I am putting her down for a nap, or she's cranky needs the comfort only a boob can give. :) She had been sleeping better at night, nursing a couple times and occasionally only once. And when she would nurse at night, she quickly fell asleep on the boob so I knew she wasn't too hungry. Except that now that she has consistently cut down her daytime intake, she wakes 2-3 times a night to nurse and does a whole feeding. Then right back to sleep without an issue until 2-4 hours later when she demands boob again. I have to admit I haven't been trying many other tactics to get her to sleep because she starts screaming and she sleeps in the same room as her sister and then I have two unhappy kids awake. Have I caused a problem? Do you think this will pass, or am I committed to this nighttime nursing until I call it off? I am really okay with waking a little to feed her, but sometimes it's 3 times a night and the lack of continuous sleep is starting to get to me. I've never gotten this far in nursing, so I'm really clueless. I'd like to try and wean her after 12 months, or more like start to go to a nursing only for naps and nighttime at some point, but I don't need to force the issue. Any thoughts from those who have gotten past this age?

Thanks so much,

Kelly

It is *definitely* normal for an older baby to be more distractible or just more preoccupied w/ other things to nurse well during the day, and very often that means they make up for it by nursing at night instead.

I would suggest going with the flow for now ... once she's a year and you start the weaning process, you can also wean down those night feedings as you ramp up the amount of solid food/nourishment she gets during the day, but for now it sounds like she needs them to make up for not nursing as much during the day.

My DD was a big night eater through her second year (she was a slow starter w/ solids), so I definitely can understand your dilemma!
