Pumping Double the BM that I Send with Baby

I'm bringing home approximately 18 oz of pumped milk each day after work. I pump three times a day (10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 4 PM). I send my 3 month old baby to daycare with three 3oz bottles (He eats at approximately the same times I'm pumping).

Soooooo milk is taking over my freezer!!! Since I have to freeze half of what I'm pumping.

Do you think it would be safe for me to cut down my pumping to two times a day - mid morning and again mid afternoon? Or would this wreak major havoc on my supply for those days I'm home all day with baby.

What are your thoughts, pumping experts? Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the board! That's great that you're doing so well with the pumping. I had to get a second freezer for my milk, it was crazy! I think you could probably cut back on pumping and be fine. My only concern with cutting back at your baby's age is that supply usually regulates in the 3-6 month range, so supply naturally settles down. For a high volume pumper, it may very well settle down to a level that is still more than adequate for needs. But if you find that with two pumps your output is decreasing too much, you've got the freezer stash to work with while you build back up (adding back the third pump). Hope that helps!!

I just replied to this on the other board, but will throw in my opinion here too.

I wouldn't cut back just yet, but that is just MHO.  You are relatively early in your BF'ing relationship with your LO, and your supply probably has not regulated yet.  I was like you and pumped a LOT of excess when I first returned to work.  My supply regulated around 5.5 months (commonly between 4-6 months).  I was just breaking even at that point or even drawing on my freezer stash a little.  If I had dropped a pump early, I would have come up short in months 6-8 when my DS was still EBF.

Welcome!!

Thank you both for your responses! It took me some time to get back to the board recently as we just went through some colds and work has been very hectic. I've continued to pump 3 times a day and actually the last few days my supply has been a little lower with just about 4 oz extra than the daily amount I send to daycare with baby.

I think I'm just going to continue pumping 3 times a day and see how it goes. We may need to invest in a deep freezer for a Christmas gift. Ha! :) We'll probably need it in the future anyways with being a family of two boys.. I'm sure we'll need to stock up on frozen pizzas and hot pockets for two boys as they get older. :)

Ha ha, that's true! I love having the deep freezer. We bought a second smaller one just for milk, and when I was done pumping we gave it to my ILs so they would have some storage.
