Supplementing

Who’s done it?  I am about out of my freezer stash due to an amazingly hungry baby and AF that won’t quit and constant plugged ducts/mastitis.  My supply seems to be diminishing, but I assume that’s b/c of AF.  Tyler is staying up later and eating an extra time in the evening, which is a time I used to pump and get a good amount for daycare the next day.  And he’s eating 2x in the morning before daycare, which is another time I used to pump.  I have tried pumping after this but only get maybe an oz total from both sides.  Argh!!!  The mastitis/plugged ducts is just an outside frustration that is driving me over the edge on top of the rest of this.

Anyway, I’m going to have to supplement here soon.  Should I just wait until the freezer stash is gone, or start mixing bm and formula for daycare?  Has anyone had issues with their baby taking formula instead of bm?  He’ll be 4 months next week – would solids (just at daycare/during the day) be the way to go instead?

I am 95% sure that I can keep up with him when we’re together and hopefully on the weekends so he’ll still be getting straight bm then.  I’m afraid to start, but think it might be a huge load off my mind.  And then I’ll get lazy and my overall supply will diminish, etc etc etc.  Argh!!!  I don’t want it to be that way, but it’s becoming too much of a daily stress trying to pump enough for the next day.  And I’m not just slightly short, I’m a whole feeding short.  I only need 12 oz for him at daycare, not an obscene amount, so there’s no wiggle room there, and I’m only pumping about 8 oz.

I tried taking fenugreek to up my supply, and I’m not sure if it’s just a huge coincidence, but every time I start, I get a plugged duct or mastitis.  I’ve tried it 3 separate times with the same results so I’m just going to stay away from it.   So I have an almost full bottle of that if anyone wants it ?   I don’t have room for any other pumps at work, I already go 2x, and I can’t see an opening at home cause Tyler is always around and hungry.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?  TIA!

I wouldn't really worry too much about not having enough milk after pumping for the baby ... you're always making more milk, and the baby is better than the pump to get out the milk.

Is whoever gives him the bottle doing "paced" feedings?

I'll have to ask daycare about that.

I'm not sure which is worse, having to do compressions for the baby ... or when they get old enough to do compressions for themselves ;)

Toddler nursing is a whole 'nother ball of wax ... DD gets fixated on a particular side, or has to switch back and forth from side to side (after being a one sided feeder throughout infancy).

Well, I think that Tyler doing compressions for himself would be great!

I was faced with a semi-similar situation recently. I knew I wasn't getting enough to my LO and was pumping 5-6 times a day and nursing 2-4 times per work day.
