Swollen nipples from pumping?

When I start pumping my nipples fit perfectly fine in the flanges, right after let down, they've swollen twice their size, and by the time I'm finished, they're rubbing on the sides of the flanges. They feel like they're bruised by the time I'm done!

I have no bleeding at all, they're just very red. I (thankfully) have no pain when my daughter latches.

Do I need bigger flanges? Or is my suction turned up too high?

I could back down the suction but its not the actual "suction" that hurts. I am pumping a decent amount despite the swelling 7oz my first pumping, 5 oz my second, and 4-5 oz in my third and fourth times.

Is there anything I can do to prevent the swelling?

On my off days if my daughter wants to eat right after I've pumped (I try and avoid that by feeding her before, but it doesn't always work) she has difficulty latching because of the swelling.

Is there anything I can do to relieve the soreness from pumping? Would Lanolin help with that (I've never really used it yet)

Other than that the electric pumping is working out SO well! I love my pump, it works well even on batteries. I was able to leave my husband enough for a 12 hour shift fresh in the fridge, and 20 more oz. in the freezer

THANK GOD FOR TECHNOLOGY =)

Could be either ... my guess is you need a larger flange.

I fit in both of the pictures LOL. When I start pumping, its a perfect fit, but by the end I'm DEFINATLY in the too small range! It looks EXACTLY like that squished and squashed. I'll have to order a bigger flange =) Good to know its fixable! Hopefully a bigger size will cut down on the soreness!

I'm also wondering if I'm pumping too much on my work days. I pump before work, and then 4 times through out the day 3 hours a part, so 5 times total in a day .... 3 days in a row. And then nursing on demand at home. She eats like a piggy when I get home lol.

The days off are nice, I only pump once, twice MAX. and then she feeds on demand. She's so gentle it only hurts when she occasionally forgets I'm not a bottle and pulls on my nipple. She rarely does that though!

Its wonderful knowing how much I've got for Pepper. Not only having MORE than enough to last a day/work week... but paranoia hits and I always wonder what would happen if something were to happen to me? Or if I ended up in the hospital (Something about moms = total paranoia lol) I know now that I have enough for my husband to feed her/wean her comfortably.

Its so nice to be able to work AND be able to feed my daughter.

Melissa,

Call Lansinoh's customer service department and explain that you're not sure if that's the problem, don't want to spend the money, and see if they'll send you a different size.

I don't think you're pumping too much ... though if you've got the wrong size, the more you pump, the more sore you'll be ... once you get the larger size I suspect you'll be fine.

I agree w/ the suggestion to call them and see if they might send you an extra set to try ;)
