I think my mother is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. She doesn't know I think this. I have an appt. to speak with her dr. about it next week. My mom is going on a 2 week cruise of New Zealand starting today (on her bucket list). She is "fine" now, but not the same quick, funny super-smart woman she has always been. I do not want to go on this journey. Anyone been through it before?

Thanks, Monica. It is daunting. My mother has not been diagnosed, and we (dh and I) still hold out hope that it's not Alzheimer's but something else, but so much fits it's scary. If she does have it, it is very early stage. She lives about a block away from us, alone. My dad died 14 years ago. My only sibling, my brother, lives about an hour away, so the burden of this falls on me.

Thanks, Melissa. The appt. was good. The dr. talked to me about her memory test last month (I am on my mother's HIPAA form so she can speak to me) and it did not indicate even beginning dementia, just memory loss. She did say there is a "pseudo-dementia" that can be triggered by depression, which is a possibility. The next step is to tell my mother,

Oh, I've been praying that you'd get good news, and while depression is not "good" it's certainly easier to treat than Alzheimer's.

My mom returned from her trip last night. I was hoping that I'd see improvement when she got back, but not so. She couldn't tell us much at all about her trip. She couldn't tell us what the food was like on the cruise except that it was "fine." She told us of 2 places she visited and said she'd have to see the pictures to tell us more. Her camera didn't work for her so she's waiting to borrow her friend's camera to pull off photos. I did tell her today that I spoke with her dr. She wasn't happy, but it didn't really set her off for the rest of the day. She still came over for dinner tonight when we invited her.
