Sorry for another thread. How was your kiddo diagnosed and how old? I still feel guilty that I didn't take my kid to the doctor sooner. His doc assures me that almost all very young children are diagnosed in an emergency situation. Is this true? Are all young kids diagnosed through DKA emergencies?

Don't feel guilty! My son was diagnosed when he was 8. It was very sudden - one evening he was crying for no reason, and suddenly I noticed him with his head under the faucet guzzling water. My DH is diabetic so I knew immediately. When I brought him to emerg, I think they thought I was crazy until they tested him and he was 28. They told us most kids were very sick when they came in, and it was very unusual to have a kid looking as healthy as Andrew when they are first diagnosed.

Looking back there were a few telltale signs, mostly he had lost weight and I hadn't notice. I should have noticed since DH is type 1, but it just never occured to me.

Thanks for the reply.

I feel a little better that they thought it was weird your little one looked so healthy.
