Hello, sorry you are going through all this with your son.

When the dr said your son was in ketosis, did he do blood work to confirm it? People who are doing the atkin's diet, they want to have ketones, and for them, its not harmful because the body can process those ketones.. Ketones aren't from your body burning muscle, but rather burning fat for energy. This happens in a few different ways.. in a non-diabetic person its from the lack of carbs, like I said before, people that are on the atkins, or southbeach diet WANT ketones, it makes you loose weight. MOST children and adults will develop ketones when they are sick.. children will develop ketones over night, especially during growth spurts. In a person with diabetes ketones are extremely dangerous and can be life threatening.. They are produced in different ways.. 1, lack of carbs, lack of insulin, and illness.. Ketones are dangerous for a person with diabetes because their body can't process them properly, if the ketones aren't cleared up the entire body goes out of whack and becomes acidic, as a result the body goes into DKA, Diabetic ketoacidocis, which is life threaten.
