I think a little bit of homework is okay. If it is utilized properly, I feel it can help detect any problems a child might be having with the day's lesson. But if the teacher just assigns it and never looks at it or checks the work, then it comes off as busywork to me.

The one exception is if repetition of something will help (ex. multiplication tables, spelling words, foreign language vocab). Although if there isn't anyone checking the work is correct, then what is the point?

Ben is a kid that never brings schoolwork home unless it is a huge project or report. Alex has a small amount of math most nights (and we have been able to work through issues with him b/c of homework) and study guides that he is responsible for knowing for tests. The teacher for the accelerated program said that he prefers 110% effort in the classroom and minimal homework. :-)

I guess it depends on the homework? If they have a short assignment that takes them 15 minutes at home don't think it's a big deal. With Sean, it's given him a chance to do harder math. It also prepares them for heavier workloads in middle and high school.

When it comes to having kids have 30 minutes to over an hour of homework a night, I think that is totally unacceptable for kids in elementary school.

Laura, I have this problem with Devin. He doesn't really get a lot of homework, but a lot of it are assignments that he didn't get done in class. It's frustrating that he gets so far behind, it's been a bad week :(

Oh Laura, 11pm is way too late!!! I had one night like that with my Alex this year. For some reason, each teacher had assigned a heavy homework assignment plus he had a test for every subject on the same day. It was a very late night and thankfully has only happened that one time. When I talk to teacher friends of mine, the general consensus seems to be less than an hour in most cases.
