How old do you think your boys need to be before you leave them home alone?

This is something I've always had trouble with because I tend to imagine all the "what-ifs".

I think it was probably around 9 for Devin, and that was just for a short period of time.

Oh, that is something I would worry about. As much as you drill the "don't answer the door" thing, I'd be worried my boys would do something like that too!

It sounds like Devin is a really responsible kid. I wonder if it makes it easier to leave them if they are home with a sibling? I wouldn't dream of leaving Jacob and Cooper home together at this point. I think they'd kill one another! Maybe in a few years.... :)

I didn't leave someone with him until I felt they wouldn't fight. They are usually doing different things like the computer, DS, etc.

Late weighing in on this issue too. Ben was probably 10 when I started leaving him for short trips to the post office or to pick up Alex somewhere. At that point Alex was only 7 and I didn't leave them home together very often due to the "fighting" factor. Although Alex is the more responsible and grounded of the two.

Over the last 2 years the length of time has increased and I will leave Nathaniel home with them for short periods (depending on Than's mood LOL). Ben gets home at 2:30 and Alex gets home at 3:10 on school days. If I am working, they are here alone til 4 when the sitter comes. Nathaniel goes to an "in between" sitter for a few hours.

I generally don't leave them at home at night but I am going to do some trial runs for my Weds night dance class. Nathaniel would go to his "in between" sitter and the older two would be at home from 6:30 to 8:30.

They are not allowed to answer the door PERIOD, even if it is someone they know. They do check caller ID and rarely answer the phone even if they do know who it is.

I think every kids matures differently and only you can judge it. Starting off with small times, close to home and getting longer or further from home and you see they can handle it seems to work for most people. I also like to check to see which neighbor(s) will be home to keep an eye on things and to be quickly available in an emergency.
