Taylor, 13, got hit by a car yesterday while biking to school! Not serious, but I'm still scared.

He was biking as usual to school which is only 3 block away, he does cross a major street (w/crossing guard)...but before he gets to Frankford he must bike past the Shamrock gas station..which is always busy in the AM. Well he approached the Shamrock and this car was leaving the gas station to get on Frankford...and she only looked one way for the traffic to clear so she could make a right turn onto FrankFord. Well Taylor was crossing the drive-off at the same time and boom...she hit him, knocked him off of his bike...the bike rolled under her car, but luckily she stopped...or she might of runned him over!

She got out of her car, as well as the lady in another car waiting to exit the gas station immediately behind her...to check on Taylor. Taylor was scrapped up a bit and his leg hurt. She got Taylor's phone number and said she was going to call that night to check on him...she never did. Taylor got back on his bike and biked the rest of the way to school...He went to the nurse later that day complaining about his leg hurting, but HE *Never* told anyone what had happened! I couldn't believe he never even thought to call me. My Gosh so many things could have happened...well we went over again...if this sort of thing happens, the Police Must be involved! Call MOM! Helllloooo!

So later at school I guess word got out that a child had been hit that morning...and the principal announced over the intercom at school that the child who was hit needed to report to the office...Taylor didn't go! He said he was in Band Ensemble class and didn't want to miss anything! I was flabberghasted (sp)...I guess I just need to be thankful he's ok, but talk about boys being boys...

(((Hugs))) I'm so glad to hear Taylor is ok. That type of thing is one of the reasons I'm so terrified about Mason's safety. I could totally see him shrugging it off and never even telling me.

Did Taylor get into trouble for not reporting to the principal? Did the school call you?

Are you going to let him continue to ride his bike to school?

Oh my gosh! I'm so upset at that lady!!!! I'm glad she checked on him but that was CLEARLY hit and run. She acted all concerned and then left and of course she isn't going to call.

I'm so sorry he got hit and hurt! I know he's not got broken bones, but I have a feeling he's got to be a little afraid of that happening again.

Poor kiddo. I'm just so glad he's OK. We had a next door neighbor, she had 4 boys and one of them was killed on his bike going to the store. So when I saw your headline I was already worried for you guys!!

Hugs all around - hug him twice again! Hope he's feeling better soon.

Oh, gosh, Nanc! I'm so sorry, and so relieved to hear that he's okay!

My kids ride bikes to school, too, and a lot farther than 3 blocks (several miles). Two of mine ride the city buses (two each way) for a trip of nearly an hour. I worry about them all the time, but they are very responsible and love their taste of independence.

When Taylor's feeling a bit better, remind him that he'll be driving soon (driver's ed starts at 15 here) and he needs to follow the correct procedures in case of an accident. "It's not optional..." works with my kids.

Did you ask if anyone at the gas station saw what occurred? If you're interested in pursuing it, hang up a sign asking for information. Someone might have recorded the license plate numbers, but not know who to give them to.

Gosh, parenting is hard.

Hugs,

Jennie

OMGosh! And he didn't go to the office ?!!?!? *LOL* What some boys will do for music. I'm glad he's okay. It sucks that the one who hit him didn't call to check up on him. She is sooo lucky no one called the cops on her. But karma will come and kick her in the butt!

I'm glad Taylor is okay.

Well, I didn't ground him or anything like that, he did get a stern talking to from me & the principal about safety & what he should do if he is involved in an accident...and that shrugging & dusting himself off is Not the way to go.

The school never called me because they didn't know it was Taylor until I went up to the school to let them know..and I will continue to let him ride his bike to school. Although he didn't ride it yesterday, maybe he needed a break.

I hope he learned something from this experience, I believe he did...He's a bit more cautious and understands that it could have been alot worse.

You're right it was a "Hit & Run" I couldn't believe it either & she still hasn't called...that'll never happen I'm sure. It was an eye opener for both Taylor & I..you know when I look at him..and think of what might of happened...well I'm thankful God was watching over him.

Funny, he was painting his bike last night to hide the scratches..

We're trying to go back to business as usual...but I do think he's a little weak in the knees about getting back on...I took him to school again today..I'll give him some time to get back on that horse..maybe once the new coat of paint has dried on his bike...he'll give it a whirl.

He was up late last night painting the scratches off...DH told me he was fixing his bike and hoped that I liked the color blue, because Taylor was spray painting right next to my van...UGH! I didn't say anything..and just let him do his thing..I think it was therapeutic (sp)..

Great idea about the gas station, I'll be following up on that one. And I never even thought of making the comparison between this situation & one where he's behind the wheel also an excellent opportunity to talk about responsible driving. Although we did discuss how irresponsible the lady was that hit him...I need to make a stronger point about where the "law" fits into all of this...especially since he will be driving sooner that I'd imagine...15 drivers permit in TX...

It's hard to walk the fine line between growing independance & wanting to make sure they are safe....I so don't want to clip his wings..as my immediate reaction would have been. I'm getting better at this, although DH still thinks I'm stiffeling (sp) at times. Heck I was never allowed to go anywhere or do anything as a young child...I don't even know how to ride a bike..LOL...my Dad was over protective to an extreme...I can't even swim or roller skate...ANywhodilly, I digress...I just want to raise them with a healthy independant attitude and into well rounded boys.

Thanks for your thoughts & concern.
