What age for Facebook?

Matthew is 9 and is asking for his own FB page, mostly to play games. I would be monitoring it but wonder if he is too young. Devin got his page about a year ago at age 11. I am friends with some 10 yos so is it becoming the norm?

My boys never asked for FB pages, but I only recently have begun to feel that I would allow Lucas to have one if he asked.

I know farmville has it's own website, so maybe he wouldn't have to join? I'm not sure about that. I know my brother has some game websites that he plays on. He had joined facebook, but actually uses those sites more for games. I could ask him what websites he uses if you want.

If you do, I would have it set very private and monitor it. I have some very young cousins who have facebook and I often wonder what they think about the things their friends post. Some of our older cousins have posted some very inappropriate things on their statuses.

Melissa,

I've been pondering this in my head lately too. Jacob asked for one over winter break but I honestly don't know what he would do with it other than play games. We told him no for now but will evaluate it again when he gets a little older. I don't worry at all about what he will do but worry more about what he will read/see. Though, I can't imagine that many of his friends have pages so I don't even really know what he would do on FB. I know I would monitor it like crazy so I guess my real reason for saying no is that he just doesn't *get* what it is used for and has no real need to communicate with people like that yet. I'm thinking middle school would be appropriate but we will see how things go.

I view Facebook as pretty safe for kids. As long as you are able to monitor it, set his settings to private (no one can view his photos, info, or status reports without being an approved "friend"), and you have to know his password of course, lol, then I think it would be fine.
Brayden has one too, but he doesn't use his very much unless he wants to play a game. He likes to play Ninja Wars (?) on Facebook. Alex has one too (he'll be 12 next month). He does have some friends from school on his that he chats with, but I know his password and I'm able to see exactly what they talk about. He's had a few friend requests of people he didn't know and he always asks me if he doesn't know the person. Usually its some family member he just didn't recognize.
He knows that if he abuses facebook at all then I'll delete his account. :)

Ben is 13 and just got his FB page this fall. Alex (10 in August) has asked several times but I told him not until he was 13. They both really just want to play the games but I figure FB says 13 for a reason, so I will stick with that.

The privacy settings for 13-18 are different too. Some things are a safety default regardless if the child chooses to try to change them. I have Ben's password, check it every day, monitor what is on his wall, and who he is friending. He knows not to friend anyone he doesn't personally know. I have blocked Chris' brother due to language in his status posts and have told Ben that I will delete any friend that uses inappropriate language, etc. He is also aware that if he misuses it, it is gone!

I know there are many younger than 13 on FB and I think if it is carefully monitored and privacy is set properly, it is pretty safe. However, most just want to play games and there are so many other sites out there for that. Guess I just feel it is something for a little older audience than grade school. JMO

Thanks for the feedback, ladies!

Matthew and I talked further and agreed to wait on a FB page.
