When Should I Separate?

Kolby is 10 and Riley is now 6 (yikes) and, as of now, they still share a room.  In fact, some of the time, Riley migrates to Kolby's bed during the night.  I know that Kolby is getting to be the age where he is going to want his privacy and his own space.  Should I wait to separate them until Kolby expresses a want to?  Or separate now?  Any BTDT Moms out there who have experienced this?

Hi Dana,

We actually JUST made the change here in the last month.  Jacob (12) and Cooper (9) were together in the same room until they just didn't stop fighting.  It was pretty obvious that Jacob needed his own space at that point and things between the two of them have been much better since.  Landon (4) and Cooper now share a room.  It's been an adjustment there, but I think we've finally got everyone into a good groove.

I think that if your boys are still okay with being together in the same room, I wouldn't worry about separating them.  Cooper would hop into bed with Jacob at night and when it really started to tick Jacob off, that's when I knew it was time. You may have a few more years before it starts bugging them!

Thanks, Kristy. I'm guessing letting them lead the decision is the best idea.  I'm glad it all worked out in your house.  Now Cooper gets to be the big brother in the room. :)
