I read this article and I'm really not sure what I would do in this mother's situation.

It is a bit sad they give things up to fit what society decides is "normal". I bet that pirate costume was awesome!

Our play kitchen was actually bought for Alex because he just loved the one at our friends' house. He was also the one that wanted a "clean clean" (aka vaccum cleaner) when he was 2. His little Hoover matched mine. To this day, he is the one that is most interested in cooking and food prep when I am making dinner. I told him to become a chef so I don't have to cook in my old age. LOL

Most of our friends have girls so our boys have been exposed to girl stuff on a regular basis. As for it being more acceptable now than when Ben was little, I guess it probably is but we never had anybody really give us a hard time 10-13yrs ago either. Than's preschool has plenty of girl and boy stuff which everyone plays with and we don't really limit the type of toys/activities here at home.

Personally, if there were one reason I would like to have girls rather than boys, it would be the clothes. So if they are so appealing to me, why wouldn't they be appealing to a 5yo too, boy or girl? You're right.....they are just more fun!

I just want to say ditto to alot that has been said, it would be a really tough situation to be in. My real worry is how public they've made it. Although it's great to see acceptance being talked about, these pictures and videos will follow this boy his whole life. Hopefully he'll be strong enough as he gets older to handle any remarks that are made about it.

I agree with your concerns about the family having made this so public, Melissa.
