Hi. I'm new here, and had a question about fabric. I've been looking for the stretch cotton that is like 97% cotton/3% lycra spandex but I can't find it at my local fabric store. The ladies who work there look at me like I'm crazy when I ask them about it. Am I inventing this fabric? I know I have seen it used for babyslings on the net. Does anyone know where I can purchase this fabric? I like to make my own pouch slings, but I find a slightly stretchy fabric is more comfortable.

Thanks,

I don't really have any help for you. But I just wanted to say I had the worst time trying to find fabric to make a sling for a friend. I couldn't find anything I really liked so I gave up and bought her a Maya Wrap! I have heard though that it is more difficult to make a sling out of fabric that stretches.
Good luck-
I found several interesting fabric stores on line. Type in the combo you want in google and see what happens.

Try asking about knit cotton (t-shirt like) or stretchy denim or stretchy canvas.

you're looking for stretch poplin, stretch twill, or stretchy canvas. should be over right next to the non-stretchy versions of it. if you can't find any there, i've seen different things like that here:

www.fabric.com

do a search for "stretch twill" or "stretch poplin" to narrow it down.

i would not use an interlock for pouches, myself. i've done it and they stretched too much, no matter HOW they were cut. though, there is a new carrier out there called a sling set, and it's basically 2 interlock pouches used at once, sometimes with a supporting wraparound. haven't tried, but they look cool.

good luck!

I hope you found some fabric for your sling. I just wanted to add that I have made pouch slings out of fleece and interlock fabric. Both worked great. The interlock is the thicker stuff you can find- ususally under fashion knits. My ds is 6-months and loves it, especially since the stretch allows me to put him in it facing out. Of course, he only weighs 12 1/2 pounds, so as he gets heavier it may stretch out, we'll see.
