Lisa, it's a fabulous reward for kids and parents -- and it doesn't always have to be for extraordinary behavior.

Another reward I like is being the principal's shadow for the day. Some principals make it a very positive experience for the kids. It includes lunch, making the morning announcements and sitting in the principal's chair and a framed photo of the experience. A guardian is invited to attend if the child would like.

Wow, just wow! I loved this part:

"Sometimes I'd stop in the middle of class and in front of all the students I'd call a parent. The kids loved that. They started begging for me to call their parent too. It was the first choice of reward for good behavior -- "just call my mama and tell her I did good today."

I also love the fact that these simple phone calls work as well with young elementary school kids as they do with older jr. high kids.

At my youngest son's school (it has grades 2-3), they have "good news calls" where if the teacher notices something positive with a student, she'll let the principal know and the principal with make the "good news call" to the parents. It works wonders!
