I have to admit, my kids grew up in an era where there wasn't the constant pull of video games or electronics. Home computers were just coming out and Xbox or DS weren't a household term and Texting? Well, that was a term that hadn't even been coined. ;) A smart phone was a vision of something in the future at that point. I'd seen something similar to a tablet at a tech convention in 1999, but it was only a "model" but still way out the future and way too pricey for anyone to have, at least at our house in any time in the near future!

So it was Legos, blocks, cars, trucks, scouts, football, baseball, weeding the garden, and even a few water fights and snowball fights. We colored, used play dough and cooked together and even sat around the table and talked at dinner time. The TV was turned off during those times too. It was just us without all the other distractions from the world. We could hear about their day, what was going on in their "world" and what they were doing; their dreams and aspirations. Even the pitfalls of broken friendships and worlds spiraling out of control as they grew into teens and young adults.

Post secondary school has been important to most of them. One is an artist and CPA, another a mechanical engineer at a large firm. A third is studying to be a history professor. A fourth is looking at mining engineer, a fifth is a CAD engineer at a plastics manufacturer and our daughters are both very creative as well. Our oldest is a writer and cook and our younger daughter is needleworker. She also has two sons she is raising and supporting. She's planning on going back to school this Fall to finish her degree in special education.
