My Dd Abby (4)is totally fascinated with butterflies. Today while I was shopping at Wal-mart I found a butterfly net and a bug viewer(big plastic see-through container with magnifier lid)so I thought I would get it for her. I got home and gave it to her and she was so excited about it. I helped her get her shoes on and she ran out the door into the back yard to catch herself a pretty butterfly. About 5 minutes later she was banging at the back door (she can't open the door by herself yet)so I went and let her in. She was very excitedly trying to tell me she had caught one. She shoved the viewer up to my face and said "I got one". I looked in there and to my utter amazement she had caught a very mad wasp. LOL! I have no idea how she got the thing in there without getting stung.

I don't think entomology is in her future!!

Wow is she lucky to have not gotten stung! Hey, does the container you are talking about have air holes? I had seen one at WM and shown it to DH and he said, yeah, great, now they get no air and fry because of the magnafying glass---talk about bursting my bubble! So now I am on the hunt for one for my ds (also 4). Just curious what you found.

OMG!! I'm LMAO!! that is soooo cute!! You never know.. maybe she does have a future in entomology....she just has to learn insect identification first!!

My daughter (turning 4 on the 29th) loooooves slugs, worms and spides. But if a fly happens to land within three feet of her, she screams and cries. LOL gotta love our girls!!

***GULP*** We have one of the "fry chambers". LOL, So far we haven't managed to catch anything but a wasp so I don't think there is any danger of Abby causing enviromental damage from killing butterflies.LOL!!If we ever catch anything, we will let it go as soon as we look at it.

OMG That is so funny! Lets hope she's not allergic to them...

My Rachel (also 4) LOVES worms, and butterflys. She HATES spiders to the point they will bring her to tears and she's totally incapacitated when she sees one (especially if one makes it to her room).

Welcome to RAG.

Karla--

I didn't mean anything by that at all---I just wondered if you had found something I hadn't seen yet, and to point out that once again my lovely (snicker) DH pointed out a problem yet again with something I wanted to buy--I hate it when he does that. LOL, and should you kill a butterfly, well, I think the world will go on.

Enjoy looking at whatever you catch--and I think it is pretty smart to put the magnafying glass on the lid--kids can't loose it that way.

Oh my gosh! That is so funny! Sounds a lot like Kellianne! I have watched her sit quietly and let a wasp crawl all over her hand while her brothers (nearly 8 and 10) run all over the yard screaming and yelling and totally FREAKING out! I am absolutely terrified of them myself, but I have tried so hard to help them stay calm mostly 'cause I am afraid they will get stung. So my thing has been to ask them, "Are you a flower?" They all say no, of course....so I tell them that the bee/wasp is just "smelling" them to see if they are good. It seems to have worked for Kellianne cause she lets them "smell" her and tells me that the bee decided she wasn't a flower! I may sound calm when I am talking to them about it, but I know secretly that I'd be running around screaming with my boys! LOL! Gotta love her!

I found these little bug containers at WM, too. These have a magnifying glass, tweezers, flashlight, etc and are made of a mesh like in your window screen. My kids love bugs and I figure they will get a lot of use out of them this spring and summer! (Dear Lord, please don't let them catch any spiders! Egad!)
