We had a young football player die, playing "the choking game" by himself recently. It was in the paper as a "household accident," but his parents came forward, hoping to educate the public. This was the typical, good kid, didn't do drugs, got good grades, etc. How tragic. For me, I just can't even understand how the idea of choking oneself, even, crosses ones mind, as a fun thing to do? I think about myself as a teen, and if anyone had ever suggested such a thing, I would have thought they were insane. I just don't understand. My parents never talked to me about any of this stuff. They never had to tell me NOT to choke myself, or NOT to huff the cleaning products under the sink, or NOT to snort candy. What the hell is up? I mean, yes, there were plenty of kids doing stupid things around me, heck LSD, angel dust, acid....there was plenty of OPPORTUNITY out there when I was a kid, even opportunity for orgies, for that matter, but why are so many kids just sheep now days, following the herd, with not a lick of common sense? They have, absolutely everything. Heck, my dd is in first grade, and some of the kids already have cell phones, for goodness sake.

So I didn't read the article. No grossness first thing in the morning when I'm trying to eat a bagel!! :0) I really wonder if some of this stems from kids being over indulged? When they get so much so young, what is there to look forward to. Do you remember when you got your drivers lic? Is was such a HUGE deal. Not so much any more. FSD18 didn't get her's until she was 17 1/2. She just didn't care. Then when she wanted it - she wanted it right now. DF was great and made her practice and didn't let up at all for the time allowance with a permit that is required in our state. Parents can sign a waiver so they don't have to wait six months to have the actual lic.

Is it the privilege of having so much when you want it that creates a sense of invincibility??

I wish we had Google Earth when I was little so I could find a neighbor with a pool. I wouldn't have done a impromtu pool party but I would have done my best to make friends with them!

What are kids thinking these days??? Maybe being in the information age is not a good thing?
