....teach them basic car stuff.  When to change the oil, how to change air filters, and HOW TO CHANGE A TIRE!!  A long time friend of mine called because her daughter had a flat at college. We live a mile and half from her campus.   Her girl is almost 20 years old and called her mom, because dad was at work.  I asked if she was unable to get the lug nuts off, because I know that the shops often put them on so tight.  Then her mom told me that she, the mom, took the daughter's car in for oil changes, put new tires on last week.  Not the kid, the mom!!  And, this kid had no clue about a flat.  Um..she is almost 20 and in college.  So, she was hoping that I would, on my day off, go and rescue her, if the mom could not get there for whatever reason.  Um...I will hold the manual open so she can read it while she changes it, but that is about it.  So, the mom went and swapped cars so her little princess would not have to change the tire.  They live about 15 miles away.   My dd had to change a guy friend's tire when they got a flat, because he had no clue!!  My dad would not let me get my license without knowing that stuff.  Both my kids can change a tire, and ds isn't even able to have his permit yet!!  I told her she did her kid no favors at all today by rushing to her rescue.  The girl wanted her mom to swap cars while she was in class, so she wouldn't have to wait around and be inconvienced!!

Ramona  Mom to 2 great kids and wife to one wonderful hubby since 1990!

My dad told me to check each lug nut to be sure I could loosen them before I left a shop. We do have roadside assistance with our insurance. I wouldn't turn my keys over to one of my kids without knowing they can do this. I also am sure they can cook, clean, do laundry, sew on a button or fix a seam, paint a wall, etc.... It is my job to be sure they can stand on their own. Now perhaps they can call to consult dh or I, but I hope that they will be ss independent as possible.

Now THAT'S a good idea! (About checking lug nuts before leaving shop). We also just renewed our AAA- love them!

I totally agree!!  They need to learn a lot to be able to live on their own.  I was doing it at 20.....living alone without family around except for a phone consult!

Now that is a good one!  Can't say that I can tie a man's tie.....of course many guys don't wear ties any more.  Perhaps it will come to where guys can't even tie a tie!  Thanks for adding to the conversation!  so glad to have you here!
