Hey moms, I need help. My 8 year old daughter is becoming more and more serious about wanting to pusue ballet as not only a hobby, but as a major sport. I have enrolled her in a studio with INCREDIBLY strict rules about what the girls can wear. For instance, the instructor says that she does NOT want to see underwear, and suggested either nothing or a THONG!! What should I do???

In my experience ballet studios can be very strict in what they allow you to wear. DD only did ballet from 2 and a half to 5 and a half so it wasn't an issue - she wore underwear. (She's now 12) One of her friends goes to a high school for ballet but I haven't heard her mention that. I can sort of see the reasoning behind it. I'm assuming she's wearning a leotard and tights I think I'd rather DD wore nothing than a thong under those.

I have a feeling that is the nature of wearing a leotard.

If you refuse, can your daughter participate???  If not what are your option.  Personally I think that 8 years old is a bit young to become so serious about ballet.  It should be fun, exercise.....but at this age not the only thing in her life!

I think at a studio like that its just standard practice honestly. In gymnastics often times the girls will do teh same thing, and at 8 and 9 years old some have already started serious competitions on the path to a "career" in gymnastics. Some gyms have rules that the kids must wear some sort of underwear because there are male coaches spotting them and its for precaution. Now as to is she old enough to try this as a sport and not just a hobby, I think that's an individual family decision, you may find after a year or two she hates it and wants to try other things.

I have a great solution! Soma sells vanishing panties and I love them. The XS'f fit YSD that is 11. I tried them under my yoga pants and they work!!! I purchased a pair for OSD to try with her volleyball spandex. It's much heathier to wear panties than nothing. Even OSD trainers and coaches tell the girls this. Soma is online as well at soma.com. I thop this helps!

Just checked with OSD and she loves these undies!! they are just regular bikinis with this stuff on the edges that keeps them in place and they don't show through
