Looking for colleges

L:izzie starts her Junior year of high school this year so we are taking her to tour some of the local colleges in our area??  What advice do you have as we begin our college tours to make our visits more successful??  What did you do right???  What did you do wrong??

Thanks Moss!  She enjoyed the visit to a city college campus.  One positive thing is that they house all the engineering students together, and most of their classes are with engineers (if she decides to go that route!)  Next Friday West Virginia University.

Obviously we are not at that stage yet but I remember my own situation. I went to university in a town that I liked because it was at the seaside. That was my main criterion! (It was also a very good university! Prince William went there LOL) but what I should have done was actually look at the courses content in much more detail than I did but at that age I found everythgin so difficutl to understand. It would also have been useful to look at what sort of schools the other students came from, particularly as it was a very small university. I loved it anyway!

I hope she finds soemthign to inspire her.

Thanks!  We are doing local colleges first to give her an idea of what she likes and doesn't like.  She can also go to presentations in school and pick other colleges to attend if she wishes....and we can't forget the college fair that comes to town yearly!

Thanks for the suggestion.  She know that she wants to do science or engineering, so we are looking at colleges that have a science program and an engineering program.  Tomorrow we go to Pitt.

When OSD was looking around, we had her start by choosing some things that she thinks she would like to study. I think she narrowed it down to 3 or 4 possible majors. Then we looked to see if the schools that crossed her paths had any of these majors. Lizzie may not have a clue what she wants to do right now, so maybe be sure they have a good two year degree (these transfer much easier) if this is the case. Go to the open house days or visit days. They all have them, it gives a nice chance to skim through and leave if you are not impressed.

Thanks for the info.  We are starting with the local colleges.  We are looking at all types.....small private, religious, and large state schools....and a state school at a nearby state.  She still isn't sure of her major.....science....or engineering, so we will see.

Having just finished that with my oldest, I say start with looking at a variety of types, big, small, medium, public and private, urban and rural campuses. Who knows what will tickle her fancy? My dd choose a small Lutheran school, here was the suprise, in a small city. She was sure she wanted to go to school in a cornfield. But, the cornfields are very close to her school. Move in day is the 16th!!!
