He was skiing with his uncle and he fell and slid into a metal pole. At first we didn't think it was too bad and I brought him home and wrapped his leg up and he went to sleep. This morning he still couldn't move his leg so I took him to the ER. It turned out that both the bones in his lower leg are broken completely through. We were in the ER for hours waiting to see if they were going to do surgery on it. They decided to cast it instead. He is in a lot of pain but it tolerating it well. I feel SO bad for him!!

Oh that is absolutely horrible. Three of my kids have broken things in the past. They were kind of excited to get their casts on at first, but after a while the itching begins. get a chopstick for him to scratch with. Poor thing! I bet the uncle feels bad.

Oh yeah, when the cast comes off--wow it will stink--so be prepared. How long does he have to wear it? He also wont be able to walk or move his ankle. Does he have to do physical therapy afterwards? Is is cast all the way up to his hip? Oh the poor thing.

He'll be in a cast for 6 weeks then a walking boot. It was a pretty bad break so we won't know if he is going to have to have PT or not for a while. Everyone keeps telling me he probably will need it. He's most upset about his Karate as he is supposed to be testing for his higher brown belt in a few months and he may not make it now.

I hope I never gain your "experience" with broken limbs. LOL!

Oh wow, how terrible. I hope that he starts to feel better soon and that they can give him something for the pain. What a nasty way to start off 2004. Bone healing vibes coming your way.

Hey Karla - Im soo sorry to hear about your son's accident!

I broke my wrist a year ago (at the end of the month) and to be honest...

The cast was worse than the surgery I had to have! At least with surgery, it was fixed, I healed and wore a brace to protect the wrist for a few weeks. With a cast, I had to wait 2 weeks to decide if I needed surgery. They kept removing the cast, xrays, then a new cast and wait and see. Not that I wish surgery on anyone, but at least I felt that I had made some progress.

A coat hanger also works for the itchies. Be prepared for the look of atrophied muscles and hairy legs. Your son may be quite surprised, but remind him the muscles will be built up again.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh Karla I am so sorry to hear about your son I hope that he recovers quickly did they say how long he will be in a cast? I think that must be one of the hardest things to dael with having a child injured or sick especially when it is a situation you can do very little for them my son tore his acl playing soccer and had to be carried off the field waiting for the surgery to be over with and to find out how he was doing was very hard -

Keep a good thought and Iwish the best for your son.
