Have your kids gone to a sleep away camp before?

DD10 doesn't seem totally ready for this yet. She's gone to overnighters with Girl Scouts and for a two night weekend thing with Girl Scouts, but that's it. I love the sleep away camp idea. It's time for the children to explore and gain some independence. I started going to one the summer after third grade. So I must have been 9. I loved it!!!!! I went every year after that until I graduated HS and then was a counselor for a couple of summers after that. Fantastic experience and wonderful memories!!!

Lizzie has gone away with the chorus, sleepovers with friends, while attending the FIRSTE seminar, but no sleepover camps for her.

My kids went away for two weeks after finishing kindergarden to the same ethnic camp I went to!!! The first three days are the worst, then the fun starts! My kids went to visit family in Europe for over a month at the end of 6th grades. I want them to be able to go away to college without getting homesick, like many of my friends did, and to be able to explore and experience things without us. I had a great time in school, but knew of many kids who got depressed being away so long for the first time. I had no issues.

I agree that this really helps with gaining some independence. Some kids it doesn't matter if they attend camps or not, but some really need this. I think DD10 is one of them. Super clingy little girl still.
