Weird Question......

A little pre-story....I became a foster mom to a seven year old boy a couple of years ago. When I got him he was a wonderful child, the only thing he had was he was afraid to sleep alone in his room and he wet the bed quite frequently. Other then that he had great behavior. I sat down with his biological mom and she had told me that he was an awesome kid and in one of her stories let me know he took a binky until he started Kindergarten. So other then that she said he was really well rounded etc. Considering his past I would agree. Since that time I have adopted him he is now 9 years old, he is doing awesome he still has accidents at night but does great sleeping alone and is doing great in school....okay end of pre-story. Recently a friend of mine is having a baby and I bought tons of baby items to make a basket. When I went to make the basket I was missing the binkies. So days later when in to DS room to put away clothes when he is sleeping I went over and he was sleeping with a binky in his mouth. I asked him about it the next morning and he said he sleeps so much better with binkies and he misses his binky etc. I am at a loss for what to do, with his past he has I just don't know if I should take it away or let him decide to get rid of it in time. He doesn't use it other then to sleep and he had a friend spend the night and didn't use it then ....right now I am just letting him but really at a loss at what to do?

I would let him have it until he is ready to give it up. I saw some beads once for older kids who chew on things when they get nervous (Like their shirt.) Maybe he could invent something to take the place of the binky that's for older kids. A necklace that he can suck on. If you make millions I'll expect royalties. LOL

I am a dental hygienist.  A soft, pliable, orthodontically designed binky will NOT harm or displace teeth.  A thumb will.  Let him keep the binky.  At some point, you can throw it away.  You cannot throw away a thumb.

My only concern would be the teeth. He's at the age where the adult ones are coming in and he'll be losing baby teeth. You definitely do not want to have issues later on in that aspect. I'd probably try to find something else for him rather than the binky.

Let him have it.  There are bigger hills to die on.  Plenty of adults still use a binky, or suck a thumb.
