Is 3yo PreK needed?

Hi everyone -

I have a 2 year old who will be 3 close to September. I'm wondering about preschool for 3 year olds... is it absolutely necessary? I'm concerned about the cost. Our local hospital does have a preschool-like class, that is just 2hrs a day, drop off. But they don't go into things because it's run monthly. (For example, focusing on a letter a week they'd get to D and then start at A the following month for the new class.) That would be much more manageable even if I tripled the class and did 3 days a week. According to the teacher, they focus on transitioning from one thing to another, listening, and separation with some colors/letters/numbers. They sing/dance/play/do arts & crafts. Would this be enough for a 3yo prek? Or is that falling way below?

Honestly I think that type of program sounds just fine, and a lot of kids are just fine in those types of preschools. At 3 I don't think there should be any rush to "push them into school", but the things the teacher is focusing on at that age, separation being a big one, are definitely starting to get important as you do begin to transition towards 4 year old pre-k, if you opt to do it, and kindergarten. I think if you see that your child is enthusiastic and wanting to learn more, you can easily do things at home with them, there are plenty of activities you can do with them at home.

You are sitting on the world's biggest library.  Look up the results of studies, and the opinions of EDUCATORS.  Then make your decision based upon what's best for your child, not what's most convenient, or cheapest.
