it's a puzzle

I was messing around in my PS this morning and found these puzzle pieces.

Your challenge today is to do something with them. You can cut photos with the first four and you can see from the last one that they go back together - vaguely.

Have fun! :)

Editing to say - I noticed the pieces weren't dark enough to work very well so I've made them darker. I hope they work better now!

This looks like a cool challenge, but I don't remember how to cut out photos with shapes. Can you help me? *edited to say* Nevermind, I found the TUT...Off to play! =D *Edited again to say* I just messed with it for the last 45 minutes and couldn't figure it out, I know I'm not doing it right. I'm frustrated with it so I'm giving it up for now and will come back to it either tomorrow or sunday. :(

This is how I do it: (I hope you have PS)

I make the shape.

do you do it as a brush?

I have PSE 5.0 so it's slightly different than PS but similar.

No, I didn't use it as a brush.

There are a few ways to do it, Debbie.

Here's what I would do - copy and paste the puzzle piece on to your siggy canvas and put it on top of the photo where you want the photo to be cut.

Then do ctrl-click on the thumbnail of the puzzle piece layer so the ants are walking around the edges of it.

Now select your photo layer and do ctrl-J. That should copy the part of the photo that's in the puzzle shape on to a new layer. (I hope it works like that in PSE.)

Doing it that way means your photo layer is intact for the next puzzle piece to be cut from it.

If you want the puzzle piece actually cut from the photo - it would be easier to see what's left if it's gone from the original - do the ctrl-click thing to get the ants as before and do shift-ctrl-J. That will cut the puzzle piece out of the photo and put it on its own layer. You can then shut the eye of that layer to see what's left of your photo.

Let me know if that doesn't work and we'll find another way for you to do it.

Edited to say - I've changed the pieces in the first post to make them darker. That might have been why they weren't working well for you, Debbie. If they're too light, it only takes some of the photo - if that makes sense. If it doesn't make sense, try it again with the darker pieces and, hopefully, they'll work better.

No, it wasn't working because i was trying to use them as a brush. I was almost near tears last night doing it, I just wanted to curl up in a ball in the corner! LOL I will try to do it again later tonight the way you are saying and see if I can do it. I'm sure I'll be able to with your detailed explanation. Thank you so much Anne! You rock!!! :D

Oh my. I wish I'd been here to help when it was making you cry, Debbie. I bet you could have clobbered me for being asleep!

You can cut photos with brushes too but I'll not confuse you with that right now. ;)
