postage stamp challenge

Today's challenge is to make a postage stamp from a photo. Like this -

I know there are several kits out there that have postage stamp style frames in them and you can use those if you like but, it would be more of a challenge to make your own. But then again, not - because it's really easy to make them yourself. Here's how I made my Rosie stamp.

First I pasted the photo of Rosie on to my canvas and then, on my layer palette, created a new layer below it.

I then did ctrl-click on the thumbnail of the Rosie layer to make the ants walk around the shape of the photo. Then on the new layer, I used the paintpot tool to fill that shape with white.

I then used transform - ctrl-T - to make that white shape just slightly bigger than the photo.

Next, I selected the eraser tool and chose a hard round brush tip of 9px. Then, I clicked on the "brush tip shape" menu and made the spacing 150%.

Then I held down the shift key and erased the edges of my white layer. Hey presto - a stamp! :o)

BTW - if I took a wee bit more time over mine, I'd try and make the corners look better. I also would normally leave it on a white background and put a drop shadow on the white layer but I wanted you to see the whole stamp edge so I put the colour background behind it.

I hope that makes sense - and that our PSP and Gimp users will be able to follow it in their programs too.

Let's see those stamps! :o)

Ive never tried this before...I did a couple things. I made the stamp first and then played around with my postage brushes I dl'ed for a travel siggy I tried. Here are the two I made. Theyre not super well made because I didnt use a picture, and I was more interested in seeing if I could actually make something that looked like a stamp. lol I figured Twilight appeals to so many people these days (myself included) why not?

Thanks, I use GIMP so Im a little jealous of your spacing feature on the eraser. hehe I did it by hand and you can see my human error. ;o) It was fun though!

I've never used Gimp but I was sure you should be able to change the spacing so I went searching. You can! Here's a tut which has a screenshot to show you where to do it -

I just saw this and you can change the spacing on a Gimp brush as well. If you pull up the brush dialog and choose, "new brush," I'm not sure of the icon, you can make all different shapes of brushes with different spacing. I'm pretty sure you could do the same thing that Anne did. I'll have to play around with it more tomorrow if I have time. :0)

Actually you can do it with the preset brushes too. When you select the brush you will see at the bottom right there is a paintbrush looking thing. Select it. Then on the box that comes up you can see at the bottom the spacing. It's set at 20% so just move it to what you want! :D HTH
