Nature has designed birth simply and elegantly. Although every labor and birth is unique, and your labor will unfold in a very special way, the process is remarkably and beautifully constant. What follows are the typical changes that occur throughout the stages and phases of labor.

Your Labor Guide-

BTDT ladies, with your previous pregnancies, how did you know that you were really in labor?  What signs did you notice that made you realize this was really *it*?

Hehe, my parents had to tell me :smileyhappy: They came over for our evening walk and I was complaining about a few things, namely my back hurting all day :smileyhappy: They were saying that I was in labor but I didn't really believe them, until we got going on our walk and I had to stop several times for a contraction. Still managed to do a 15 min mile though, hehe

I knew because my water broke.... no, make that, gushed out of me! Painful contractions kicked in 20 minutes later on the drive to the hospital.

With both of my girls I was having consistent contractions (2-3) minutes apart. My doctor broke my water with my first and then with my second my water broke during a contraction.

I leaked a little bit of the waters after my evening bath - called the doctor and he asked me to come over the next morning so they could check if it was my waters or just bath water. As I was getting ready to go have them check, I started getting back pains. All of my labor pains stayed strictly in my lower back, the reason I knew it was labor was that they were coming and going quite regularly. I ended up being given pitocin, because even though it was my water that leaked, the labor wasn't starting like it should and apparently you need to plop the baby out within 24 hours of leaked waters to prevent infection.

I've only gone into labor on my own once so far, with William. It was Thanksgiving, 5 days before his due date, and we didn't go to the big family thing we always go to every year because it was 2 hours away and we didn't want to risk going into labor so far from home. At some point I got a craving for cranberry salad, so Libby and I headed over to Meijer. It was 6 or 7pm, not exactly sure, and while standing in line I started having mild contractions, the first ones I'd ever had in the pregnancy. Still wasn't 100% sure it was the real deal, but by 2am they were intense enough to wake me up and we called our friend to come and watch Libby until my gram could come and get her later in the day. We probably made it to the hospital around 4am or so.

It was the real deal, and after they made me walk around the hospital for a couple hours, they admitted me. Had to break my water, and he was born at 1pm that day.
