Children's mental abilities do not appear to suffer from women's moderate levels of drinking while pregnant, a new series of Danish studies suggests.

The studies involved 5-year-old children. Those whose mothers had consumed up to eight alcoholic drinks per week during pregnancydid not have a higher risk of attention or IQ deficits than the children of women who did not drink during pregnancy, the researchers said.

However, eight drinks seemed to be the threshold: Nine or more drinks per week was associated with an increased risk of attention problems in children, the researchers said.

A few drinks during pregnancy may be OK, study suggests- http://todayhealth.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/20/12319902-a-few-drinks-during-pregnancy-may-b...

Interesting!  Where do you stand on the issue?  Do you feel comfortable having a few drinks during your pregnancy?

I agree I would never be able to drink during pregnancy. It is not an issue of if it will effect my baby's development or not, it is a fact that I would imagine my baby floating around drunk in the amniotic fluid just because I wanted one small drink. I am not even going to drink while breastfeeding for the first few months, then pump so I am able to have a drink on a special occasion without my child being affected. My DH supports my decision and has given up alcohol as well, not that either of us drank in the first place. We normally would share 1 drink if we wanted something.

I agree with this, especially the part about your husband being included in the decision making part. For the 9 months we are pregnant there is not much our husbands can do for our babies, just for us. So I think it is really important to include them in decisions like that. I also would not feel comfortable drinking during pregnancy. I know some women who have occasionally and went on to have healthy babies, but I personally could not take the risk, because like you if anything did end up being wrong I would blame myself forever, even if it was never known if the alcohol was the cause or not.

I don't think I'd ever be able to drink during pregnancy....much less have as many as 8 drinks per week. I just don't think it's worth the risk and I know if something was wrong with my child I'd blame myself later on. Plus my DH would never let me drink while pg, he has a say so in what I'm subjecting his child to as well.
