Anyone have experience with a doula or midwife?
So, I've decided to stick with my OB and use a doula. I was considering using a midwife, but they never answer their phone, and just after I tried calling twice, my OB's nurse called to see how I was doing. I'm taking it as a sign (sigh). I talked to her about my concerns and that I want to try to do this naturally and with a doula. She said that would be just fine and that they have worked with doulas before. I'm going to write up a specific birth plan, use a doula, and hope for the best.
I had my first son with a Midwife (certified nurse midwife) and a hospital birth- I am doing the same with this pregnancy. I loved the personal attention, and sometimes doctors seem condescneding to me and midwives make decisions with you instead of for you.
I may be switching from an ob/gyn to a midwife. If so, MAYBE I won't need a doula. A doula is not covered by my insurance either, but costs around $300 for meetings, labor, and post-delivery visits. I know I'm not using the correct language, so sorry about that. I was put off by my ob/gyn. I am 27 weeks and asked her about labor/delivery. She said we could talk about that at week 36. I was confused and thought that was strange. Isn't labor/delivery something you need to be prepared for? That scares me. The way the office talks about being induced and c-sections, like it's no big deal. Well, it is a big deal to me.
So I'm looking into my options. It's kind of stressful, but I know that within a week or two it will all be settled and I will feel more comfortable when the big day arrives.
