What to do?

Hi Everyone!

I just found out that I am about 6 weeks pregnant. While I am excited, I'm a little concerned. I'm not even sure what to do next.

I live in Kansas. I'm 24 and make about 1400/mo before taxes. My boyfriend, whom is also excited, makes $4k/mo, but gives $2k/mo to his ex-wife for their 2 children. Technically, it should be lower because he is earning much less then he did when they divorced, but we can't afford a lawyer so its keep paying or go to jail.

I know I need to go to a doctor and start on prenatal care, but since I don't have insurance (I haven't been on my job long enough) I don't know where to go that I can afford. I've looked into medicaid/health wave, but since we make $3k/mo together we earn too much. However, we don't have much money to spare either!

All thought this is great news (kindda), Its also bad because I'm starting my first semester at college (life long dream) and will only get to have one semester before I prepare to have a child, which will be my first.

I don't have family to rely on or ask, so Im pretty much alone. Also, since we just moved, I don't even really have any friends. But I do have to say my boyfriend has been excited and very supportive which is nice.

He said that he's heard of some places that will put you on a payment plan through out the pregnancy and will do prenatal care and the birthing for around $3500. That sounds too good to be true, but have any of you guys heard of that?

Any advice or things I could look up in trying to get help with all of this?

I thought of one more thing. You mentioned that you are going to school. Have you checked out the health clinic on campus? They may be able to help. I also remember that my University offered health insurance at a reasonable price so you may want to check with them about that too. Good luck to you!

I'm sorry this is so stressful. Bummer that the closest Planned Parenthood is so far away. I'm guessing that the health department is probably your best bet at this point. I would give them a call and see what they could do to help considering your situation. I'm sure there are places out there that would be able to see you- it is just a matter of finding them. Good luck to you and please keep us updated. HUGS!

Thanks! I have looked into Planned parenthood, however they shut down the one in this area and the closest one is 45 mins away. When I called them they said all they could do is give me a preg test and sonogram (for $145!). I already took two EPTs and I don't think I am far enough for a sonogram to tell me much more, much less being able to for over $145 for it.

I haven't looked into the health dept yet. I'm thinking I will wait until after the first of the year because I don't have any money right now and I will be further along by then. The states assistance program says that we make too much, but we barely have enough to cover our bills. We can't even afford a lawyer to get my boyfriends CS reduced to where it should be, so we are struggling to pay that and our bills so he doesn't go to jail.

I don't have a doctor, we just moved here a few months ago. I'm looking into some places. But I really don't even know what I'm looking for :(.

Hi there,

First off, Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm glad that you found this board and I hope that you find friendship and support here during your pregnancy journey.

Have you looked into places like Planned Parenthood? I know that places like that will go based on your income and I'm sure they can set up a plan for you. Also, in my state they have district health departments that do the same thing. You pay what you can and they are usually very able to work with you about it. I would suggest contacting your state to see if there are any programs like this available. Do you have a certain doctor that you usually use? If so, you may be able to call them and see what options they know of or are able to work out with you.

Best of luck to you and please keep us posted!
