Caffeine During Pregnancy: Yay or Nay?

Women can drink a cup of coffee or one soft drink a day during pregnancy and not worry that it might put them at risk of miscarriage or preterm birth, according to new guidelines released by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

The professional group issued the information from its Committee on Obstetric Practice, which reviewed studies on the topic before making a decision.

"Finally, we have good evidence to show that having a cup of coffee a day is fine and it poses no risk to the fetus," said Dr. William H. Barth Jr., chairman of the committee on obstetric practice and chief of the division of maternal-fetal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

They are talking about a reasonably sized cup of coffee or serving of soda, of course.

How do you feel about drinking caffeine during your pregnancy?  Will you be avoiding it completely? Enjoying a cup or two a day? What's your plan?

For the most part, I don't mind some here and there. However, some woman should realize that some babies do not do well with caffeine at all. There was a mom who was having problems with her baby's heart rate, to the point they were getting her ready for a c-section after some heavy monitoring. The one OB noticed that the heart rate was stabilizing over time. She found out that her baby was not handling the small amount caffeine from two Hersey's kisses were causing the problem. A few hours later, heart rate was stable, and when she completely cut out caffeine, even from chocolate, she didn't have any more problems. The OB told her that she's seen it before where some babies cannot handle the tiniest amount of caffeine. So it's something to take into consideration.

I am trying to avoid it, but if I get a headache or need to wake up at work I'm not opposed to have a serving.
