Am I missing something about crib bumpers?

Why are they soooo expensive?  I mean, some of the bedding is crazy expensive and some of it is not so bad.  But I found a bedding set I like on clearance for around $70, but it's 10 pieces and some of it, I don't like or wouldn't use.  But the bumper and the blanket are what I want.  So, I decide to look and see what just a bumper costs.  Well they're pretty expensive, just the bumper alone.  I could buy the 10 piece set on clearance that I like for only $20 or so more than 1 bumper.  Am I missing something about bumpers?  Are they different in some way when they come in a set than when purchased alone?

I want to do giraffes.  But I don't want that giraffe pattern in my face all the time.  So I was thinking I could do solid multicolors, with giraffe accents...mobile, decorations, pillows, wall stuff...  I found the CUTEST mobile.  Problem...it's $50!!!!!  for a mobile!?  But if I can save on the bedding, maybe I can justify it.  It's the Jungle Jill mobile by Carters.  I like the Jungle Jill bedding okay....but I don't want other animals.  I just want giraffes that look like real girafffes, not blue and pink and green griaffes. I mean, are all mobiles that epensive?  lol  Here's the mobile.  http://www.carters.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-Carters-Site/default/Product-Show?pid=789887301621&cm_mmc=GoogleProductFeed_carters-_-origin=pla-_-789887301621-_-keyword={keyword}-{copy:matchtype}&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=789887301621

Here we go.  Woot.  More money saved. Thanks for telling me that.  I had wondered about the suffocation risk,  but I assumed you had to have them for something.  Ha!  Ya gotta hand it to the marketers...  Think I'll get cute dust ruffle and sheets and call it good.  Maybe a cute blanket for decoration/floor time.  And maybe now I will spring for the pricey mobile!  But I did find a fisher price one along the same idea as the carter one for $25.  We'll see.

They say the only things that should in the crib are a mattress pad, fitted sheet, and mattress, and of course the baby. The bumpers are for when they are older and rolling around, so they don't get their limbs entrapped between the bars. There are some really cute breathable bumpers on Amazon for around $30. This one is my favorite and might go with your theme: http://www.amazon.com/BreathableBaby-Breathable-Mesh-Liner-Safari/dp/B005C3IT62

That's the brand of bumper that we plan to buy for this little one! We have always used traditional bumpers and never had an issue, but I just feel like the new research and the awful stories you hear about babies getting caught in them justify making the change. But I definitely want to use a bumper, because I just know she'll end up getting her little legs or arms stuck in between the slats on the crib. So we're going to get the pink breathable bumper, along with some sheets (plus the crib skirt that we recently bought), and that'll be it for the crib bedding. Will free up some money to use on more of the fun stuff anyway :-)

I know not everyone uses bumpers, but there is no way I wouldnt use them. A woman my mother and I know had a little boy and she didnt put any bumpers in his crib. He rolled over in the night and got his arm stuck and before she heard him and got his arm unstuck, his arm had broken! I know thats rare and Im sure it wouldnt happen, but I will not be taking any chances.

My MIL already got us a crib set that SHE likes, but we are still going to get a bumper and matching sheets that WE like.  I just HAD to have the whole matching set with my daughter , and you are right you will NEVER use most of the stuff that comes with it and it will be just taking up space. Here is a "breathable" safari print bumper from babys r us you might be interested in! http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11363559

Im not totally sure what my husband and I are going to get yet, but here are a few I am considering:

We are still looking like I said... I just know I AM getting one.
