No more ultrasounds?

I have an appt next week with my ob to get the strep b test. I asked him last appt if I would be getting another ultrasound and he said no we dont have one scheduled for you in the future. I guess that is a good thing but I would love to see baby again. Was thinking about getting a 3d or 4d ultrasound. It is around 100 dollars. Just wondering if it is worth it?

Thanks :smileyhappy:

If it's a 'last' baby, you might want to just in case it nags you later. On the other hand, I heard it's hard to get a good view past 30-something weeks. Baby has to cooperate, too. I don't think we would've paid for a 3D if we didn't get the u/s package. Anyhow, my doc didn't get one opportunity to use it because of this camera shy baby. We just happened to get lucky when we had to see the genetic specialist. The resolution of the machine and the skill of the u/s tech really do make a huge difference! So be sure to see references before you decide.

I don't think third trimester u/s are common through the doctor.  Since u/s are a diagnostic tool, not just a fun photo shoot, they have to have a reason to do them.  By third trimester, the organs are already formed and it's harder to come up with reasons that insurance will accept.  At least, that's how it was explained to me, I might be wrong, lol.  I've known a few people who went overdue, nearly 42 weeks pregnant, and they had u/s at the end.  But I've never had one past about 5 months pregnant.

If you do an elective u/s, just remember those techs aren't as good as the hospital!  We did one at 16 weeks to find out gender.  The tech took better pictures than the hospital tech, but she didn't give us good advice and wasn't as medically knowledgable.  I got all freaked out, thinking I had low amniotic fluid.  Then, my hospital u/s a week later showed fluid levels were fine.  I could have stopped saved myself all that worry if I had just skipped the elective scan!

I think most OBs/midwives only do them in the 3rd tri if they suspect a problem. I only had the 20 week, and then a quick vaginal one at 28 weeks to check placental position. All I could see for that one was an arm.

I am categorized high risk so I get more ultrasounds. I had one at 28 weeks and will have one at 32 weeks. I am doing so well so far (knock on wood) that one doctor said I probably wouldn't need anymore but I saw the other doctor last appt and he scheduled one. I wasn't about to complain. :smileyhappy:

Let us know what you decide.

My Dr office does an u/s at 35 weeks to double check position and amniotic fluid level.

i did the 3d for 100 bucks. DD did NOT cooperate.. went back a second tie.. she still didnt.  won't do one this time.. frankly.. I think all the babies look the same in the 3d.. lol

Probably the main reason I decided to pay for the u/s package (u/s at every visit, no extra charge) was to get measurements and check the position. So, I don't think it's totally unnecesary. But yes, it def depends on the tech's skills. My doc does good measurements in her office, but she doesn't seem to have the knack for taking cute, non-medical type profile shots that we happened to get at two other docs. I've been to six different techs/docs for this one.

PS - yeah, they do all look pretty similar! Except my own baby, ofc. ;-)
