Reason for my miscarriages??

Hello ladies,

I was a regular on this board about 13 - 18 months ago. Since then my family was blessed with the safe arrival of my sweet Emily.

Anyway, recently I was diagnosed with adult onset of Celiac disease. This illness is when your body is unable to process gluten (found in wheat, barley, rye and malted products (like malt vinegar). It results in your body not being able properly absorb ANY nutrients. Anywho, the reason why I mention it is that it has been documented that it can cause miscarriages. Before I was pregnant with Emily, I had 3 unexplained or early miscarriages/chemical pregnancies. Could this be the reason for the miscarriages, I'll never know.

There is a simple blood test that informs your doctor of the presence or likelihood of having this disease (while still consuming gluten). If your Dr has checked everything else under the sun for you, ask for this test. If it shows that you potentially have the disease, then they do a biopsy of your intestine to confirm the disease. During the endoscopy (I had to be awake because I am breastfeeding), my GI doc commented that the damage was worse than he expected and suspects that I was asymtomatic for a while before the onset of my noticeable symptoms at Christmas. I'll never know when exactly the disease was triggered but stress, pregnancy and surgery are among the triggers and over the course of the last 24 months, I have had all 3.

Anyway ladies, I thought that I would share this with you in case it can help just one other person!!

Best wishes for a very short period of TTC.

For me, the symptom that drove me to my Dr's every 2 weeks until we figured it out was constant diarrhea for about 6 weeks daily. Other symptoms that we have since figured were due to celiac and not post partum recovery were gas, bloating, lethargy, changes in my moods.

Celiac is a weird and wonderful auto immune disorder where everyone's symptoms are different and rarely does anyone have all or most of the possible symptoms.

Here's are links to the US and Canadian Celiac association/foundations where they list all the possible documented symptoms:

Oh, and I also had a drastic weight loss. 15 to 20 lbs in about 5 weeks with out dieting. I haven't been this size in at least 5 years, if not longer.
