Someone please explain DVC rentals...

I hear about DVC rentals but figured they'd be spendy.  But someone (on another board) recently said that DVC rentals should be cheaper than AP discounts for rooms.  Which got me thinking that I should really look into it!

Anyone have a DVC rental site they recommend?  And, seriously, could you explain how it works, exactly?  Because I'm guessing it's not as simple as just making a hotel reservation, right?

I rented DVC points for Aulani.    I went through Dave's DVC rental.   It was painless - and I got a 2 bedroom villa for what a regular hotel room would cost.

I don't know how it works ticket-wise going through DVC though.    But for the room you submit what you want with a deposit.   They confirm your reservation and then you pay the balance.    The downside is you can not cancel, there are no refunds, etc.   The upside was we got a bigger space for less $ and even a kitchen to do some meals on our own.

When you get confirmed you do get a reservation #, same as if you went through Disney.    I could check in early, make dining reservations, etc.    And not sure about WDW, but Aulani came with parking passes and discounts on merchandise.

We haven't used DVC rentals before but I wanted to add that some of the DVC rental sites have AWESOME last minute deals! Since you often drive it might be worth liking them on Facebook... I noticed the DVC  Rental store was offering over 100 points today for travel before December 1st for only $8.75 a point (normal price is $14 p/point.)
