According to an article in yesterday's New York Times, Spirit Airlines will begin charging as much as $30 each way for carry-on bags that are too big to fit under the seat.

If you've flown anywhere since airlines started charging for checked luggage then you're not surprised to see charges for carry ons.

I am not surprised about the charges, but airlines like Spirit must have expected more carry-ons when they started charging for even ONE checked bag. That's nuts. Who can travel with no luggage (other than one day business travelers)???? I am sure they knew this charge was to follow and were just easing it in.

We always pack light, and I agree that is the best way to be. I think there should be a standard max size for one carry-on per passenger, but I think "fit under the seat" is too small. 22x18x10.....who makes carry-ons that small?

It may or may not change the way we travel. Could be we opt to drive more vs. fly.

I've not flown in a long time, but can imagine people overstuffing to try to get away with saving $.

Exactly my thoughts. Flying won't be worth the trouble any longer for a lot of families. Maybe they just want to cater to the business flyers, but if some of these airlines go out of business it will be tough to feel sorry for them.

Pay toilets, huh? That airline is just asking for people to pee in their empty drink cups. LOL!

With all of the cutbacks on destinations, direct flights, stupid charges, medium-high ticket prices, layovers and lack of direct flights

At this point, we can still get the $79 flights (sometimes even $69) directly to Orlando from Dayton, Ohio. I know not everyone likes Airtran, but they have this flight down pat....we've never had trouble. We have it down to 2 bags checked for a family of 6, but if they start charging for carry-ons, considering we do one per person to get down there what we need.....we might drive. The drive is brutal though. :(

We have the Airtran Visa....maybe as card-holders we'd be exempt from carry-on charges. Probably not, but it's fun to imagine.
