Ear Planes?

Hi
Well Murphy's Law and all that. We leve Saturday for WDW. My ds (10) has an ear infection. The school called a little while ago and they saw him in the clinic. He had no cold or anything. Of course, now I'm worried about my littlest one who did have a cold last week and has been super fussy this week which we chalked up to her teething. But her pediatrician is going to take a look at her later tonight in the urgent care office. Rather be safe then sorry!

So my question is do those ear planes things really work? And can you use them with babies? I am figuring the pressure is not going to help him feel very good. The nurse practitioner suggested giving him Dimetapp before we get on the plane to help decrease the fluid in his ear. I just hate to think we're going to have 1 possibly 2 miserable kids on the plane and it's their first plane ride. I just knew it was too good to be true! ;)

Anyone have any other remedies for helping with ear infections and the pressure in the plane when flying?

TIA

Tara

I LOVE the Ear Planes....for myself and the kids. I have very sensitive ears, and these make a huge difference for me. The kid ones have always been difficult for me to find. I had to order them on the internet before our last trip.

I did use them on my daughter when she was 10 months old, no problem.

I hope everyone is happy and healthy for your trip. Have a wonderful time!

I'd read about Ear Planes online and saw the Jr. size on possibly Amazon but I was afraid I wouldn't get them in time.

Thanks all!

I am going to have to see if I can find any today. I never have much of a problem with flying and neither does my honey but the kids have never been on a plane, so we will see. Plus I had to split up the kids so I hate to think my ds will be having issues and I won't be sitting with him. He'll be with his step-dad and my mom and I'll be with my two dd's.

It's pouring rain here so I'm just ready to get on a plane and go!
:)

P.S. luckily the baby does not have an ear infection too!

I've found them at my grocery store, so it may be worth it to take a peek there!

Also if your kids are young and you are afraid of them swallowing gum, try tootsie rools or another soft candy, but do not give it to them until you are actually on the runway ready to go (As opposed to pushing back form the gate).

I 've had to fly with my under 2 son a ton this year and we found this to work great!

Best of luck to you and hopefully, if meds are required, they will be feeling 100% by the time you leave (I think antibiotics take 3 days to start to make you feel better!)

I second the Tootsie Rolls suggestion!

Hubby is out right now trying to find some. And no luck - they only stock the adult size apparently.

My kids both have trouble with their ears when flying. But, DH didn't think to give them gum when they flew in Nov and swimming lessons have since taught them how to "pop" their ears, so maybe it will be a non-issue this time. I'd like the Ear-Planes though just in case.

After the kids' flight in November (to visit me while I was on a Business trip), DS(8) was a wreck. He woke in the middle of the night screaming in pain and we didn't have kids tylenol on hand, so I had to break an ibuprophen in half and give him that for the pain. Then a visit to the pharmacist the next day put us on to decongestants. She said any cold med wouldn't do - it had to be a DECONGESTANT and the way it works is that it reduces the amount of fluid buildup in the ear so that there's more room in there for pressure variation. Both kids still cried during landing with pain, but it ended right away.

The kids don't seem to be all that worried though. The gum plan and the ear pop plan seem to have reassured them. I hope it works!
