We booked way back in January 2006 when the 1500 package was announced. We arrive September 10th. We are hoping to be able to book in October for 2007 at Port Orleans.
While you can book your ADR's 120 plus 10 days out, We didn't book our Aug Trip until April. THat was when they announced Free Dining PLan. WIth only 4 months, we still had relitively little problems booking our ADR's.
I think it all depends on you and how much you are willing to compromise on! Plus, weather or not you are willing to keep checking on deals that may save you more money.
AND Another factor is how you are paying. If you want to pay a bit at a tim,e then booking earlier will allow that. We were lucky enough to have our tax return still sitting in the bank so we put it on a credit card and paid in full when it came in!!
I am booking about 12-13 months ahead of time through a Disney travel agent and will pay on it for the 13 months and try to avoid anything going on the credit card. I did this when I booked a cruise (pay on it for months) and it worked out great. If you use a TA then if discounts happen they will let you know. I love TAs and use them as often as I can to travel.
We are going in May 07, but I'll wait until the end of October to see if they release any Spring deals. The last time we went in May (05), Disney Visa released a Spring deal around October. ADR's won't be as difficult to book as they are during free dining, so I'm not really too concerned about that.
We usually narrow down the Resort we want to stay at, and once we have that decided. I book ASAP. It gives me a good feeling to know we have our spot reserved!!
I would try and decide where you want to stay first. You can always change the package if a code or discount comes up after you book your room.
