We saved money by getting our park hoppers from a discounter....it was either Maple Leaf Tickets or http://www.undercovertourist.com/, can't remember which. I was a little nervous about using one of those discounters, but it worked out fine. I learned about it on either allears.net or mousesavers.com (I think -- that planning was a long time ago!). Their ticket prices look similar to ticket prices on Disney's web site, but they include tax, and Disney's doesn't.
We didn't get the food plan for several reasons. Food at Disney *is* expensive, no doubt about it. The plan makes sense for some families. But we didn't want to be tied down to dinner reservations, didn't always want large multi-course meals in the hot weather (we went in July) and we also didn't want to spend that much time eating. Not to mention that we were only staying onsite for the last half of our week, so the dining plan wouldn't have worked anyway. We ate counter service most nights, did Hoop-de-Doo Review one night (great fun and worthwhile), ate off-site a couple of nights, and ate breakfast in our room each morning.
The food plan may work out better for you -- it might work better for us this time when we go in November.
Good luck!
Oh cool!
Welcome to the board!

If you choose to use a travel agent, whether it's AAA, joes online discount disney or moe's brick and mortar travel down the street make sure that the agent you're working with is a Disney Specialist and has graduated from the College of Disney Knowledge. Otherwise you'll end up doing all the legwork and not be able to touch your reservation.
Like Sonya said you will want to: "make sure that the agent you're working with is a Disney Specialist and has graduated from the College of Disney Knowledge."
You will just have to ask them.
