Now that I've planned out our first day at DW (MK), I have the rest of the vacay to work on.

Not staying on site doesn't exclude you from riding the monorail. I advise parking at EC, even if you won't be going there that day. It has always been the easiest parking lot to escape from, as well as closest parking to the front no matter when you arrive. If you are using scooter(s), I highly advise them. They have handicapped cars, and go to both MK and EC. From EC, there is a boat that can take you to MGM (the International Gateway). AK has always been a PITA for us to go to, as there is only the bus, or drive and park. We have a large stroller (3 seater) and I would do almost anything to avoid folding it up to ride the bus.

I haven't read any of the other replies, so I'm sure others have filled you in on the rest. Probably just repeated them here! LOL!!!

My oldest 3 kids do go off on their own. They must stay in the same park, and they must carry a cell phone. They have a cheapie pay as you go. Whatever works, right?

Is EC the same as Epcot?

Yes, EC=Epcot. My very own abbreviation, LOL! The International Gateway is located in the back of the countries in Epcot. There are turnstiles there, and a boat that takes you through the Boardwalk and some of the hotels. It also goes to MGM. We usually stick to the monorails and boats. It's so much easier to use those than to fight tired children out of the stroller and onto the bus.

Ummm, no. You have to park at the front of Epcot. Walking is usually better than taking the tram to the entrance there because it's so well laid out. You will beat the tram there! Exiting the parks from Epcot is also quicker. Traffic just seems to flow better there. You still have to walk through Epcot to get to the International Gateway. I recommend coming back from MGMs closing through Epcot. It is especially nice at night after most of the park has cleared out. All you have to do is
